The decision of breastfeeding is a personal choice. Some women may consider breastfeeding their new born, while some may not. It has generally been observed that one draws a strong opinion from his/her surroundings like friends and family.

 Medical experts like the American college of obstetricians and gynaecologist, recommend breastfeeding the infant’s at least for 6 months. It is also recommended to breast feed the new born till his first birthday. Food items like fruits, vegetables, and good grains can also be fed but after 6 months along with breast feeding. 

 Breast milk is an ideal source of nutrition for babies. It has the required nutrients for babies in the right proportion and is also easy to digest. It has also been observed that babies absorb the required nutrients from their mothers and mothers who are low on calcium or vitamin D fail to provide the required proportion of vitamin d in such cases new born babies are prescribed vitamin d drop till the duration of 6 months or more.

 In the current situation, it is paramount that we maintain not only our health but also our little ones.

 There is no such scientific proof about corona virus spreading through breast feeding; studies are still being carried out. So, all the new mothers who are breast feeding their kids need to take special precautions and specifically mothers who fear of testing corona positive or have been tested corona positive should take the following precautions:

  1. Wash or sanitize hands before breast feeding.
  2. Wear a mask while breast feeding.

If the above precautionary measures are followed, the mother can breast feed her new born. But it is also advised to maintain distance from the baby at other times.

  1. Am I producing sufficient milk for my baby?

If you concerned that wither you produce sufficient milk for your baby or not then you should pay attention to the following signs,

  1. If your breast is full before a feed and feels drained after a feed.
  2. Your baby needs feed after every 2 or 3 hours.
  3. If your baby is gaining steady weight per week.

If you agree with the above signs it means you are meeting your babies need for milk.

  • Feeding baby frequently can help you produce more milk
  • Consume a balanced diet
  • Drink more fluids
  • Take adequate rest and quality sleep

 

  1. How to avoid and soothe engorged Breasts?

Breast engorged happens when the mother produces more milk than the babies’ requirement or due to blocked ducts. In such cases, it is advisable to use hand express technique or use of breast pumps to release excess milk. It is also advisable to use a hot water bag to open the blocked ducts.
